Awolune

Privacy and data

How we protect your data.

Last updated 2026-11-08. Short version: your skincare records are private to your account, and you can download or delete them. Below is what Awolune does with them today.

This page is the same text as Awolune → You → Privacy Notice.

This is a beta

Awolune is in a small private beta run by Romaine Swaby. Features may change or break while we improve them. If a change could affect your saved records, we’ll tell you first. Awolune is for adults (18 and over).

Not medical advice

Awolune explains and organizes. It doesn’t diagnose, it can’t tell what caused a change in your skin, and it never changes a prescription. For anything painful, spreading, scarring or worrying, see a dermatologist or doctor.

What Awolune keeps, and why

  • Your email, to sign you in with a one-time code.
  • Your name (first, optional last, and what you like to be called to greet you). Your last name is never shown in greetings.
  • Optional gender identity and pronouns, to address you respectfully. Never used to infer skin type, pregnancy, or treatment needs. You can change or remove them in You.
  • Date of birth, to confirm you’re an adult and keep advice age-appropriate. It’s self-reported, and your age is worked out from it when needed.
  • Skin answers, routine, products, check-ins and notes, to build your Skin Brief, routine and progress.
  • Optional skin tone, and whether pregnancy or breastfeeding could be relevant. Skin tone is in your own words or on the Monk Skin Tone scale; the pregnancy question only helps avoid suggesting ingredients that aren’t recommended in those situations. You can skip both, and change or remove them any time.
  • Your Ask conversations, so you can come back to them. They’re saved on this device, and in your account while Awolune AI is on. Delete them any time in Ask → History.
  • Skin photos you choose to save (Skin Progress), with their date, the area, your note and anything Luna said about them. The pictures are kept in a private area of your account that only you can open (no public links), re-saved without camera details such as location, and removed when you delete a photo or your data. Photos are saved privately to your Awolune account. Luna only analyzes photos you choose to share, and a photo you attach in Ask is sent for that question only and isn’t saved unless you choose. Awolune doesn’t identify faces or build face profiles.
  • Product photos you choose to read with Awolune AI are sent for that request only (see above) and aren’t kept. A barcode scanned with your camera is read on your device.
  • Products you choose to share with the Awolune catalog: only the brand, name, variant, kind, size, barcode, ingredients as printed, and where each of those came from (read by AI or checked by you). Never your notes, price, routine, skin details, photos or name. It’s kept in Awolune’s database, may be shown to other people once it’s been confirmed, and is linked to your account only so a mistake can be corrected. Sharing is off until you choose it for a product, and deleting your data unlinks you from what you shared.
  • Insights you chose to hide, so Awolune doesn’t show them again for two weeks. Insights themselves are worked out on your device from your records each time.
  • Short error codes if saving fails or you ask for support (for example “sync failed”), linked to your account so we can help, never with skin details.
  • Your city or region, if you choose, for seasonal tips. Never GPS or a street address.

Where it’s kept

In your private Awolune account (hosted on Supabase). Through the app, only you can read your records; each account can only reach its own data. Records aren’t end-to-end encrypted, so the people running the beta could technically access the database. They’ll only do so to keep it working, to fix a problem, or when you ask for help.

What leaves the app when you use a feature

  • Luna, Awolune AI (OpenAI), only while it’s on: your question, the last few messages of the conversation, a short summary of the skin details you’ve shared, and the check-ins, product experiences and reactions that relate to your question, described in general words (never your name, email or location, and never your notes unless you choose to share part of one). You can limit this to the basic summary in You → What Awolune remembers. OpenAI doesn’t use it to train its models. Awolune asks it not to store the answers, and it may keep requests for up to 30 days to check for abuse. Anything you type is sent as you wrote it. Turn it off any time in You → Privacy and AI.
  • Luna reading a skin photo (OpenAI), only if you agree to it separately and then choose “See what Luna notices” or “Ask Luna what changed”: the one photo (or the two you compare), the note you wrote about it, and a limited summary of your answers, goals, products and routine in general words. Not your name, email, location or your other photos. OpenAI produces a reply for that request; Awolune keeps no copy outside your private photo storage. Luna describes what is visible and is not a diagnosis.
  • City search (Photon by komoot, using OpenStreetMap) receives the words you type in the city box.
  • Product search (Open Beauty Facts) receives the barcode or the words you search for.
  • Reading a product photo with Awolune AI (OpenAI), only if Awolune AI is on and you choose “Create it from a photo”: the front (and, if you add it, the back) photo of the package, and nothing else. Not your name, email, location, skin details, routine or other photos. OpenAI reads the printed words for that request; Awolune doesn’t keep the photo. You check and correct what it read before anything is saved.

Like any website, these services also see your device’s internet (IP) address. None of them receives your name, email or date of birth. Your full skin records stay in your account. Only when Awolune AI is on, OpenAI receives the question you ask and a short summary of the skin details relevant to it (see above).

Awolune’s server functions (for Awolune AI and reading product photos) run on Netlify, which may keep standard request logs (such as IP address) that contain none of your records. Sign-in codes are sent by email through Supabase.

On your phone

  • Reading an ingredient list is done on your phone with the system’s text recognition. The picture isn’t uploaded and no AI is used. You see and can correct the text before anything is saved.
  • Face ID lock (optional, off by default). Your phone checks your face, fingerprint or passcode. The app only learns yes or no; nothing is sent anywhere, and your account sign-in is separate.
  • Widgets and Lock Screen (optional). Tonight’s moon needs none of your information. Your next routine step and your next photo check-in date appear only if you turn them on. They’re read from a small note kept on your phone, hidden on a locked Lock Screen, and cleared when you sign out.
  • Siri, Shortcuts and Home Screen quick actions only open a screen in the app. They send nothing, and the app still asks you to sign in or unlock first.
  • Reminders (optional, off by default). Morning and evening routine, photo check-in and skin check-in reminders are scheduled on your phone and shown by it. Awolune doesn’t send them from a server, your choices and times stay on your phone, and the text never includes product names or skin details. Quiet hours, a pause and one switch to turn everything off are in You → Reminders.
  • App updates. To stay current, the app asks Expo’s update service whether a newer version of its code is available and downloads it. That service can see your phone’s IP address, the app version, the platform and the update channel (for example “staging”). It receives none of your account details, skin records or anything you’ve entered.

What Awolune doesn’t do today

  • Sell your data, or share it with brands, advertisers or other partners.
  • Show ads, or use tracking pixels or third-party analytics.
  • Use your records to train AI models.
  • Send anything to a clinician or anyone else. You share only what you choose, yourself.

If that changes. Awolune may add new uses of your information in the future, for example research partnerships or insights for skincare professionals. Before any new use of your information, we’ll update this notice and tell you in the app, ask for your permission where it’s required, and put appropriate legal safeguards in place. A new use won’t apply to records you’ve already shared until those steps are done.

Your choices

  • See and take everything: You → Your data → Download all my data.
  • Change anything in You at any time.
  • Turn off Awolune AI: You → Privacy and AI → Use Awolune AI. You can delete your conversations at the same time.
  • Delete your account: You → Your data → Delete my account. This deletes your records, Ask conversations, stored photos and your sign-in. It is the same account the Skinwise web beta uses, so your Skinwise web data is deleted too.
  • Delete your records: You → Your data. This removes your skin records and Ask conversations; to also remove your sign-in email, contact support@awolune.com.
  • On a shared device: sign out when you’re done. If some changes haven’t saved yet, Awolune asks whether to keep, download or remove them.
  • Not kept: your answers in the “Something new on your skin?” guide stay on the screen, unless you choose to send them to Ask.
  • Feedback you send goes from your own email or messages app, and only includes technical details if you leave that box ticked.
